William Howard Hess, Jr.

William Howard Hess, Jr., 77, of Cemetery Hill Road, Benton, died late Thursday evening, September 17th, 2009 at his home. He had been in ill health for the past four years. Born July 9, 1932 in Benton Township, he was a son of the late William Howard Hess, Sr. who died August 16, 1998 and Sylvia (Polk) Hess, who died February 21, 1996. Mr. Hess had been employed by Magee Carpet Company of Bloomsburg and later for Kawneer, also in Bloomsburg. He retired in 1991. He served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. His hobbies were fishing and woodworking. Surviving are his wife, Alice B. (Piatt) Wilson Hess, whom he would have celebrated a 23rd wedding anniversary with on November 14th; his children: Dennis Hess and his wife, Leslie, of Benton; Randy Hess and his wife, Sara, of Orangeville; Mark Hess, Orangeville; Beth Combs and her companion, Rick Fowler, Stillwater; Janet Wilkinson and her husband, Cuyler, of Orangeville; Mike Hess and his companion, Kathi Kile, of Millville; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; his step children: Deb Martz and her husband, Robert of Benton; Rick Wilson and his wife, Kathy, of Benton; Kenny Wilson of Benton; Jeff Wilson and his wife, Belinda, of Georgetown, Del.; 7 step grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren 4 step great great grandchilden; Sister and Brothers: Hilda M. Mulaney and her husband, Hubert, Stillwater; James M. Hess, of Wilkes-Barre; Thomas C. Hess of Schwenksville and Donald F. Hess, Benton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ada M. (Lamoreaux) Hess on October 13, 1985; a son, David Hess on Aug. 5, 1972; a sister, Helen F. Mulaney on May 9, 2000; a brother, Carlton R. Hess on July 30, 2000 as well as one step great grandson. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11 A. M. at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Rt. 487) with Pastor David I. Bronson, Cambra Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Jonestown Cemetery with military honors accorded by a joint veterans group. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11.
