Shirley L. (Lockwood) Wenner

Shirley L. (Lockwood) Wenner, 80, of Zaners Bridge Road, Stillwater, died early Sunday morning, May 8th, 2016 at her home. Born January 4, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late John V. and Della Josephine (Evans) Lockwood. She and her husband, David Richard "Dick" Wenner, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on January 26th. Mrs. Wenner was a graduate of Kalamazoo College in Michigan and also did graduate studies at the University of Michigan School of Education. She was the first director of the Columbia Sullivan Head Start program. A former school teacher she taught Kindergarten through second grade and had taught in Michigan and the Washington DC area. She was the director of two child care centers in the Philadelphia area in the late 1980's and 1990's and was the head start program organizer in the Delmarva Peninsula in the 1960's as part of the War on Poverty. She had also been employed by Columbia County Children and Youth. Mrs. Wenner was a life-long advocate for children and families. Her volunteer work included the Women's Center of Columbia/Montour, the American Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Survivors Program, and many Democratic Party campaigns. In 1999 she was recognized with the Outstanding Women's Award by the Columbia- Montour Counties Women's Conference. The Berwick Health and Wellness Foundation presented the Community Caring Award to her in 2003. Mrs. Wenner was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) at the Friends Meeting House in Millville. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her two daughters: Melinda Wenner Bradley and her husband, Matthew, of Oyster Bay, New York; Amanda K. Wenner-Calhoun, of Silver Spring, Maryland and five grandchildren; Eleanor, James, William, Gavin and Vivian. A Memorial Service will be held in the manner of Friends on Sunday, May 29th, 2016 at 2 PM at the Friends Meeting House in Millville. Private burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Fishing Creek Township. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the Greenwood Friends School - Wenner Fund, 1509 S.
