Phillip M. "Bart" Bartel

Phillip M. "Bart" Bartel died Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Phillip was born in St. James, MO on August 15, 1942 to Florence Meyer and Luther M. Morris. He was raised in Wautoma, Wisconsin by his adoptive father Wilbert Bartel and his mother Florence. Phillip graduated from Appleton High School in 1960 after which he joined the U. S. Navy. While in the Navy Phillip attended nuclear power school from which he graduated at the top of his class. During his time in the Navy, Phillip was an electrician on nuclear submires six out of his ten and a half years that he served. After leaving the U. S. Navy in 1971 Phillip worked for Duquesne Light and at a Bechtel nuclear plant before starting to work for PP&L in the early 1970's. In 1977 he moved to Benton, Pennsylvania where he and his wife of 49 years, Carolyn (nee Ball) Bartel, raised their two sons on a small gentleman's farm. On his farm Phillip enjoyed his dogs, animals, hunting, making maple syrup, making his own venison sausage and wine making. Phillip had a 26-year career with PP&L working in many capacities including control room operator and shift supervisor. Phillip enjoyed his retirement by lake fishing with his wife on their boat; he was an avid reader who loved western movies and Duke Basketball. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents and youngest son, Britt Alan Bartel. In addition to his wife, Phillip is survived by his son, Brett A. Bartel and wife, Laurie, of Mansfield, TX; his daughter-in-law, Petrina Bartel, of Bloomsburg, PA; his grandson, Phillip S. Bartel and his wife, Rachel, currently living in Italy where Phillip is stationed with the U. S. Army. He is also survived by two sisters: Sandra Gosha of Appleton, Wisconsin and her husband, Albert and a sister, Pat Schutte, of North Carolina; his brother, Larry Morris and his wife, Deidra, of Arizona; his many nieces and nephews and multiple cousins whom he enjoyed growing up with in Wisconsin. Private services will be held for friends and family at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that you make a donation to the ASPCA in Phillip's name. Arrangements are under the direction of the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., Benton.
