Josephine A (Hess) Ash

Josephine A. (Hess) Ash, 93, formerly of Harrison Road, Orangeville, died Saturday morning, July 9th, 2011 at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born December 23, 1917 in Fishing Creek Township, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Nettie (Phillips) Hess. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Freas Ash, on February 1, 1992. Mrs. Ash assisted her husband with the operation of the family farm and also had done domestic work for area families. She had been an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Ladies Group, was a Sunday School Teacher and had assisted with the fellowship suppers as well as the other activities of the church. Mrs. Ash served as a 4-H Leader in her younger years and had been a member of the Bloomsburg Homemakers Club. Her hobbies included quilting, knitting and stitchery. Surviving, are her three children: Karen Hess and her husband, Gary, of Orangeville; Barbara Birt and her husband, Erle, of Williamsport; Karl Ash and his wife, Joan, of Orangeville; 8 grandchildren: Debbie Sokol, Amandy Strzempek, Leonard, Lyle, Seth and Karl Ash, Jr.; Mark Gordner and Vicki Lawson. Also surviving are 10 great grandchildren: Andrew, Megan, Jason, Ethan, Sam, Brienna, Gunnar, Braydon, Andi, and Aimee. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Marie Gordner in April of 2004 and by a brother, Ernest Hess; 2 sisters: June Laubach and Hazel Hartzel as well as 3 step brothers, Walter Pealer, Russell Pealer, Edward Pealer and a step sister, Gertrude Pealer. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, at 10 AM at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darwin C. Goshorn, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Jonestown Cemetery. A Viewing will be held Monday from 6 to 8 PM at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Rt. 487).
