Joseph F. "Joe" Shuman

Joseph F. "Joe" Shuman, 99, of Pine Crest Lane, Shickshinny, died Saturday evening, April 6th, 2013 at the Bonham Nursing Center where he had been a resident since June 27th, 2012. Born August 10, 1913 in North Centre Township, he was a son of the late Miller Harvey Shuman and Helen (Wynnings) Shuman. He and his wife, Etta Isabell "Issy" (Harry) Shuman, celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on February 1st. Mr. Shuman was a 1931 graduate of Berwick High School. He later attended the Cincinnati College of Embalming where he graduated in 1938. He worked as a licensed funeral director and later was a sales representative for the T. R. Taylor Furniture Company, retiring in 1975. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He studied to be a lab technician in the Army at the 187th General Hospital in England. He was also was stationed in Longview, Texas. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Shuman was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Berwick and more recently attended the Town Hill United Methodist Church. He was a 50-plus year member of the Shickshinny American Legion and the Berwick Elks Lodge and a former member of the Coles Creek Hunting Club. An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed fishing and hunting. Although he and his Wife had no children of their own they greatly loved their numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Alonzo Shuman on February 3, 1957 and by a sister, Dorothy Doherty on February 3, 1975. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 11th, 2013 at 11 A. M. at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Rt. 487). Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick with full military honors. A Viewing will be held Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 at McMichael's. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the First United Methodist Church, 200 Market Street, Berwick, PA 18603.
