George M. Miller

George M. Miller, 88, of Benton (Sugarloaf Township) died peacefully Friday evening, March 27th, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born November 14, 1926 in Shumans, Beaver Township, Columbia County, he was a son of the late Garfield and Mary (Chyko) Miller. He and his wife, Dorothy J. (Temple) Miller, would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on August 14th. He was Valedictorian of his graduating class at the former Beaver School and then faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. Mr. Miller was a longtime employee of Sordoni Construction Company where he was employed as a construction superintendent, retiring in 1991. He was a very active member of the Bible Baptist Church of Benton and was instrumental in the construction of the church building. He served in numerous capacities including trustee and treasurer. Mr. Miller was a past president of the Isaac Walton League of America and was a board member of St. Gabriel's Cemetery Association. He also had served on the Benton Area School Board and was the recording secretary for his local carpenter's union. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. Most of all, he was very devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Dorothy, are his three sons: James M. Miller and his wife, Darlene, of Benton; David A. Miller and his wife, Mary, of Stillwater; Gary L. Miller and his wife, Hope, of Benton; 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen Bellum, of Shumans. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, George S. Miller on April 21, 2006; a grandson, Christopher G. Miller on September 11, 2002 and by a brother, Peter Miller and a sister, Eleanor "Min" Fedder. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 2 PM at the Bible Baptist Church of Benton, 250 Shickshinny Road, Benton, with the Rev. Paul S. Moseley, Sr., his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township with military honors accorded by a joint veterans group. A Viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (S. R. 487). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Columbia Montour Hospice, 410 Glenn Avenue, Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
