Erma V. (Spencer) Zubris

Erma (Spencer) Zubris, age 94,eldest daughter of Bruce and Lena (Beishline) Spencer, passed away Wednesday morning, April 27th at Bonham Nursing Center. Born May 14, 1921, Erma was raised on a dairy farm with four brothers and seven sisters. She graduated from Huntington Mills High School in 1939. After high school she was a nanny and cook for the Thomas Heffernan, Sr. Family. She was employed at several factories in the area including Bercon, Berwick, and enjoyed her employment at the Child Care Center of Bloomsburg University. She loved cooking and canning huge amounts of vegetables, fruits and venison. She created great family memories with the holiday meals she prepared that brought her whole family together. Traveling with her on country roads in later years she would recall people she knew throughout her life and recall details of her life and their lives. Erma enjoyed listening to polka music and watching the polka dancers on WVIA. She was especially thrilled when John Stanky called to wish her a “Happy 90th Birthday.” She also enjoyed watching NASCAR, listening to country music, especially Johnny Cash songs often sung by Tim Johnson at the Deer Oak Lounge. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her former husband Eddie Zubris; brothers, LeRoy, Ray, Paul and John Spencer and sisters Evelyn Comstock, Iva Conner, Nola Taylor, Ruth Wagner, and Betty Flanagan; son-in-law Bobby Mitchell; and grandson Heath Mitchell. She is survived by daughters Gloria Froelich, Wilmington, DE; Mrs. Robert (Martha) Barchik, Cambra; Paula Mitchell, Red Rock; and Mrs. Allan (Debra) Casterline, Bloomingdale. Sisters: Marion Remley, Divide; Mrs. Paul (Barbara) Bonham, Mossville. Grandchildren: Jennifer Froehlich, Brian Barchik and wife Sara; Sean Barchik, Kelly DeFinnis and husband Samuel; Kyle and Laura Casterline. Great-grandchildren: Gabrielle and Elizabeth Barchik as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family is most appreciative of the kind loving care Erma received from the Bonham Nursing Center and Columbia-Montour Hospice employees. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (S. R. 487) on Saturday, May 14th, 2016 at 11 A. M. Pastor Scott Lyons, Stillwater Christian Church, will officiate. Friends and relatives will be received from 10 AM until the time of the Service at the Funeral Home.
