C. Harold Bankes

C. Harold Bankes, 94, of Main Street, Orangeville, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at his home. Born April 29, 1920 in Bloomsburg, he was a son of the late Rev. Cryder Harold Bankes Sr. and Ellen Jane (Pugh) Bankes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marqueen (Hess) Bankes on August 4, 2009 after more than 66 years of marriage. Mr. Bankes was a graduate of Bloomsburg High School, Class of 1937 and attended Temple University. Mr. Bankes was a self employed printer and owned and operated Orangeville Printing Company, retiring in 1982. He had worked briefly for Magee Carpet Company in Bloomsburg and for the Berwick AC&F during World War II. He was a long time and very active member of the Orangeville United Church where he had served in various capacities including Sunday School Superintendent; Deacon, head Trustee and was on the Consistory. He and his wife traveled extensively during their retirement years. Mr. Bankes was an active member of Oriental Lodge, No. 460, F.& A. M., Orangeville for more than 60 years. He was Past Master of the Lodge in 1955 and Secretary for 25 years. He was also a member of Caldwell Consistory of Bloomsburg for more than 60 years as well numerous other Masonic bodies including: Royal Arch Chapter, Crusade Commandery and the Irem Temple Shrine, of Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of the Columbia County Shrine Club where he was President in 1965 and also served as its Secretary for 26 years. He was also very active in civic/community affairs. He was the publicity director for the Bloomsburg Fair for 25 years; served on the Board of Directors of Columbia County Farmers National Bank, now known as First Columbia Bank and Trust Company for 29 years, retiring in 1993. He had served as Secretary of the bank board and for the its holding company. He was a member of the Bloomsburg Kiwanis Club for 40 years and held the position of President in 1973; a charter member of the Orangeville Sportsmen Club; the Orangeville Fire Company; a former member of the Friendship Fire Company in Bloomsburg; a member of the former Orangeville Chamber of Commerce; a past president of the Columbia County Historical Society and was a charter member of the Catawissa Boat Club. Surviving are his 5 children: James L. Bankes and his wife, Cathy, of Mechanicsburg; Elaine M. Edwards and her husband, Robert, of Orangeville; Cryder H. Bankes, III, of Brooklyn, New York; Keith G. Bankes and his wife, Mary Ann, of Stillwater; Chris E. Bankes and his wife, Patricia, of Coatesville; 10 grandchildren: 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Carbine, of Hyattsville, MD, and a brother, Eldon Larue Bankes, of Ocala, FL. In addition to his wife, Marqueen, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Donald J. Bankes and Royce R. Bankes. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 11 A. M. at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (S. R. 487) with Rev. Nancy Hardy, his Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Orangeville. A Viewing will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM and Saturday morning from 10 until the time of the service at 11 at McMichael's. Masonic Services will be held Friday at 8 P. M. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Orangeville United Church, P. O. Box 196, Orangeville, PA 17859.
