Alvin Lewis Litwhiler

Alvin Lewis Litwhiler, 93, of 873 Wolfhouse Hollow Road, Benton, Pine Township, passed away Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014 at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been a patient since last week. Born July 15, 1920 in Roaring Creek Township, he was a son of the late William Henry Litwhiler and Sarah Ann (Reigel) Litwhiler-Ford. He attended Numidia Schools. Alvin married Margery Claire Wagner on August 3, 1940 in Sonestown. They were married for 63 years until her death on May 30, 2004. He worked at many jobs in his younger years, including shoveling snow to clear township roads, Rishel's Furniture Store, helping build roads outside of Unityville, transporting produce for Charles Kitzmiller, Sr., working at Girton Manufacturing Co. and finally retiring from TRW as a supervisor in 1984. Alvin had served on the school board for the Millville Area School District. He was also a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, the 39 Plus Club and the Millville Senior Citizens Center. he also enjoyed traveling with his wife. He worked on his own farm for many years and raised beef and pigs. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and canning, but his true passion was gardening. He also loved chickens and delivered eggs to many local families until late this past year. More than anything he loved his Farmall tractor and driving it into the woods to cut firewood. Surviving are his two daughters: Sharon Claire Davis and her husband, Allen, of Unityville; Ann Renee Gray of Benton; 6 grandchildren: Cynthia L. Bennett, Lewis E. Davis, Shirley L. Girton, Abra A. Bitler Weaver, Jessie M. Bitler and Darrell W. Bitler; 8 great grandchildren; David A. Bennett, Robert A. Bennett, Kimberly A. Bennett, Bobbi Jo Clark, Sydney R. Baker, Rowan Weaver, Collin Weaver and Presley Weaver; 3 great great grandchildren: Devon T. Girton, Makenzie R. Clark and Dimitri A. M. Bennett; 6 siblings: Irene Corby, West Virginia; Eugene Litwhiler, Orefield; Edward Litwhiler, Florida; Evanna C. Kessler, Orangeville; Charles Litwhiler, Benton and Lillian Miller, White Hall. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two infant children: Lorna Elaine Litwhiler on September 26, 1941 and Frederick Lewis Litwhiler on May 12, 1947; a granddaughter, Mona Sue Davis in 1964; 2 great great grandchildren: Jasper Magraw in 2013 and Celine Magraw in 2014; a Brother, Henry Litwhiler and a sister, Helen Litwhiler Elmes. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11 A.M. at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (S. R. 487) . Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery, Jordan Township. A Viewing will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM at McMichael's. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Columbia County Unit, 1420 N.
